Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This week’s theme is Top Books I read because someone recommended them to me. So I thought it’d be fun to do the top books I’ve read because my mom recommended them to me. For the longest time I got almost all of my book recommendations from my mom. Even now if there is popular book out we both want to read we take turns reading them first and reporting back to see if it’s actually worth it. Growing up, both of my parents read a lot so I grew up just grabbing books off of their shelves that looked interesting. Mostly my dad just tosses random memoirs my way (which are almost always fantastic) but it’s my moms recommendations that are always perfect. So below are the top ten books she’s thrown at me recently.
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
Still Alice by Lisa Genova
Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan
The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore
Joyland by Stephen King
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler
Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts
Those are some good recs!! I loved The Nightingale, Me Before You, Still Alice, Reconstructing Ameila and E&P. I have Brain on Fire on my TBR. Great list!!

That’s so great that you get so many good recommendations from your parents!
I loved Me Before You! Eleanor and Park are still on my TBR and I’ve also heard so many good things about The Nightingale.

Oh definitely read the nightingale! It’s the one book I pretty much tell everyone that they will love it even if they hate historical fiction!

I get most of my face to face (well, phone to phone) recommendations from my mom as well. She knows what I like.

Oh that’s great, yeah I often get a mix of recs online but the ones face-to-face are usually the books I end up loving the most

Awh – that’s so cute!! My mom thinks I read far too dark stuff (she only wants unicorns and rainbows), so this wouldn’t work for me.
I loved Brain on Fire, Me Before You, and Zelda!

Hahaha that’s how my mom usually is, I get a lot of beach reads thrown my way. But every once in awhile she throws me for a loop with some random thriller book

I listened to Joyland on audio a few years ago and really enjoyed it. It was such a good mystery. I adored Eleanor & Park. It’s one of my favorites. I really want to read Brain on Fire. It sounds so interesting. Great list!

Oh I’ll have to check it out on audio (I keep trying audiobooks and fail). I can’t recommend brain on fire enough but it’s also terrifying!

I got into reading because of my mom too. She would read chapter books to me when I was a kid. Eleanor & Park is amazing. I really loved it.

It’s crazy to think how many habits we have now because of little things our parents did with us! And same it’s just so much cuteness!!

Ooh those are some great recommendations. I have The Nightingale on my TBR list but haven’t gotten around to it since it’s a print book and I read everything on my iPad. Weird, I know.
But I enjoyed Me Before You and Eleanor and Park. Both were great books but only one of them gutted me like no other. Sometimes you just need a good book that makes you a giant crybaby. Ha!
Great list!

Same sometimes I have to pick a book that seems rough because I know I need a good meltdown! The nightingale might gut you (it definitely did me lol).

I’ll let her know 🙂 I used to hate all the books she read when I was a teen and really gravitated towards horror but eventually came around 🙂

Yeah, I don’t think I enjoyed my mom’s taste until I was an adult.

Hi! I really enjoyed Still Alice. I was surprised how much I liked it. I think I liked equally the story of how she got it published 🙂

Oh I’ll have to look into that! I just remembering reading in her bio that she was a neurosurgeon first which I think is one of the reasons I find her books so amazing, they’re very technically accurate but I still understand what’s going on lol

The Nightingale has been recommended to me so many times – one of these days I’ll get there. 🙂

Hi! Great post. Would you recommend Reconstructing Amelia?

Oh definitely and that’s probably the best of her books (at least to me) because if I remember right you don’t actually see the ending coming for awhile which is always refreshing
