Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
So here are the 12 Books that would be on my syllabus if I took the teacher route in life…and if I didn’t have to deal with school boards or age appropriateness or any of that boring stuff.
Dystopian Future Unit
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
- Animal Farm by George Orwell
Southern Lit Unit
- Beloved by Toni Morrison
- Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor
- Child of God by Cormac McCarthy
The Classics
- Oedipus Rex by Sophocles
- Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
- And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Contemporary
- The Abundance: Narrative Essays Old and New by Annie Dillard
- Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler
- The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore
Gah I have only read And Then There Were None – which I actually want to reread because I read it so long ago. I feel like I need to read some of these especially Handmaid’s Tale and Beloved. Great list!!

I just reread And Then There Were None when the bbc movie came out and that was fantastic! I have reread A Handmaids Tale since high school so it’s definitely on my list!

I like the theme of your list! And totally with you on Handmaid’s Tale. I also loved the Zelda book. And, because he’s my all-time favorite author, I have to put in a plug for something by Pat Conroy to go on your Southern Lit list!

Oh I’ll definitely check him out! My only real experience with good southern literature is from a college class where it was a lot of the same!

I am a teacher and I spend way too much time compiling my fantasy syllabus; mainly it involves binning off Dickens in favour of Hardy and Gaskell, and making kids read East of Eden. I’d also love to be able to do more with linking classics with really contemporary YA. Sigh. I’m actually teaching The Handmaid’s Tale in a dystopian unit from next week; if the kids don’t like it they might find themselves in a real-life dystopia…

Oh that’s totally awesome your kids will be reading it though! The most Contemporary book we ever read in high school was a book about how cloning is bad, as was the book lol

Oh thanks! A lot of these were ones I was forced to read for school, complained about until the last minute, then devoured them because I actually enjoyed them lol
