Favorite 2016 Releases So Far

My best friend since freshman year of high school is getting married this Saturday and we finally finished all of the DIY things this past weekend so my bridesmaid duties are done until the weekend. In other news, MATT PROPOSED. On on top of being busy with everything else we had to make the rounds to go visit different family members all last week. Really this is just my long-winded excuse for why I’ve been MIA from the blog lately. So here is why you actually stopped by my blog, my 5  favorite new releases of 2016 thus far and 5 disappointments.

Sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler: 22 year old Tess  stumbles into a coveted job at a renowned Union Square restaurant, we spend the year with her as she learns the chaotic, punishing, privileged life of a “backwaiter,” on duty and off. I just finished this book this past weekend so be on the look-out for a review soon.

The Abundance by Annie Dillard: Read by glowing review for this collection and then go read it yourself and fall in love.

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner: This book has been the bright spot in YA for me this year so-far and I can’t recommend  it enough to people who love YA and people who don’t. Dill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life—at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes, and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father’s extreme faith and very public fall from grace. He and his fellow outcast friends must try to make it through their senior year of high school without letting the small-town culture destroy their creative spirits and sense of self.

The Ramblers by Aidan Donnelley Rowley: Otherwise known as the book that got me out of my reading rut. Set in the most magical parts of Manhattan—the Upper West Side, Central Park, Greenwich Village—The Ramblers explores the lives of three lost souls, bound together by friendship and family.

American Housewife by Helen Ellis: Satirical short stories done right. A sharp, funny, delightfully unhinged collection of stories set in the dark world of domesticity, American Housewife features murderous ladies who lunch, celebrity treasure hunters, and the best bra fitter south of the Mason Dixon line.

Tuesday Nights in 1980 by Molly Prentiss: You can read my thought about it here. This book wasn’t necessarily bad it just wasn’t for me.

The First Time She Drowned by Kerry Kletter:  I’ve been sitting on my review of this book for about a week now because I don’t know how to put into words how I felt about this book because I didn’t hate it at all, I think I just wanted more from it.

Underwater by Marisa Reichardt: Another case of my expectations being way too high

The Good Goodbye by Carla Buckley: Once again just one that maybe if I read it at a different time I would feel differently? Who Knows

The Year We Fell Apart by Emily Martin: I wanted this book to be so many things that it wasn’t and that’s probably my fault. A good read but I was still disappointed by it.
