Top Ten Characters People Love That I Just Don’t Get

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

This Week’s Topic is Ten Characters Everyone Loves But I Just Don’t Get

So for this week I decided to go with characters that everyone else seems to love and I just can’t get behind. For the most part I like the dislikable characters because they’re usually pretty open about their flaws and have a “this is me” attitude. something about these characters continue to grate on me even if the book is one of my favorite books, usually the secondary characters and the story can save it for me enough where it’s still a fave. Just these characters man, can’t handle them.

Greg Gaines: the constant self-deprecation became too much for in parts where I started agreeing with him and was just like “yeah you’re right, you do suck” just out of spite

Charlie: Charlie doing dumb things reminds me of when I was in high school and said and did weird shit as a way to fit in. No one likes to be reminded of their weirdness. Plus all of the crying, I was an emotional child and too an extent still am <shoutout to everyone else who cries during the Budweiser superbowl commercials> but his crying struck me as whining, at least to my 15 year-old-self the last time I read this. Now, I love this book, just not Charlie.

Mim: Her sarcasm and constant berating of people reminds me of my teenage sister. She will grow up, and I’m kind of bummed we didn’t get to see that same arc with Mim.

Lola: I wanted to love her, I loved Anna and Isla, but I just couldn’t. Her constant lies, her attitude, and her affinity for over-reacting. She made such a huge deal about what happened with the Bells two years ago, going as far as to almost passing out when she learns they’ve come back. I think Lola was aimed at someone who was younger and could relate and I just couldn’t.

Shea Rigsby: Her love for her best friends dad was just too much. You’re an adult not a 16 year old living in Tree Hill.

Jodi: She is the ultimate doormat, not the most exciting person to read about because I just kept wanting her to do something

Annabel Greene: I’m just going to apologize to everyoine for this this one now. I love Sarah Dessen but Annabel Greene is my least favorite Dessen creation. Her constant desire to avoid conflict and remain so passive within her own family it was just something i had a hard time getting past.

Romeo: Romeo was such a blehhh. He doesn’t even check if his lady is dead and just takes all the poison, once again only thinking of himself. Juliet does the “manly” (of the time) act of stabbing herself with a rusty dagger while her boy toy took the easy way (of the time) of poison.

Frodo: Frodo man you were the worst part of the book for me. I don’t even know what it is about you but I skip chapters where you’re just hiking and turning your back on Sam to hang with Gollum for no real reason. Full disclosure: I did have the cover story with pictures of Elijah Wood form his Teen People interviews on my bedroom wall until an embarrassing age.

Elizabeth Gilbert: I hate to do this because this is nonfiction and memoir but I think just the complete lack of self-awareness is what was the final straw for me.

Disagree with me on anything? What are some characters you hate that everyone else seems to love?

Blech, Frodo. I liked his character in Fellowship but with each subsequent book I started to really loathe him! Now I can’t even watch his scenes in Tower or Return, which is disappointing because I still really love Sam! Though Frodo didn’t deserve his love and devotion in the least.

    My TTT.

When you mention Romeo that reminds me of Rosalind – he loved/ was obsessed with her but she wouldn’t give him the time of day until he spotted Juliette. 🙂

Also I actually like movie version of Frodo more than the book version.

Oh I completely agree about frost but I think that’s just because of Elijah wood lol. Oh, I completely forgot about that, Romeo was so dumb.
